What is Mold, Anyway?
While there’s no doubt you’re familiar with mold, you may not know exactly what it is. At Madison Ave Construction, we feel it’s important to understand what mold is so that you can understand the importance of home remediation services.
Mold is a naturally-occurring fungus that thrives in moist, dark, and warm conditions, making Nassau County an ideal climate for mold growth. In nature, it’s actually quite beneficial, as it aids in the decomposition of organic materials, like leaves, dead wood, and even deceased animals; when it grows indoors, however, mold can become problematic.
The fungus thrives on cellulose materials, such as wood, drywall, sheetrock, tile grout, wallpaper, and fabrics, for example. It feeds on the materials that it grows on, and can leave serious damage in its wake.
Mold produces airborne spores, and as such, it spreads rapidly. A small patch can turn into a major infestation in just a few days; hence why it’s important to schedule an appointment with a Old Westbury, NY mold removal company as detect or suspect the fungus is growing in your Nassau County home.
Why is Mold Growth Dangerous?
Exposure to mold can cause a host of problems, including structural damage and health complications. Because it feeds on cellulose materials, and since so many of the materials that your Nassau County home is constructed of and that it contains are cellulose (wood, paper, linens, drywall, etc.), mold can not only cause structural damage, but it can also destroy your personal possessions.
The spores that mold releases can negatively impact the indoor air quality of your Nassau County home, and exposure to those spores can cause health issues; particularly for those who are sensitive or allergic to mold, or who have compromised respiratory or immune systems. Mold exposure can lead to:
· Nasal congestion
· Sore throat
· Irritated eyes and skin
· Lung infections
· Shortness of breath
· Worsening allergies and chronic respiratory conditions, such as COPD and asthma
Factors that Increase the Risk of Mold Growth
Mold needs moisture in order to grow. If your Nassau County home has recently sustained a flood, is poorly ventilated, or if the humidity levels are high, mold growth is a serious cause or concern. The following are just some of the factors that can increase the risk of mold growth:
· High humidity levels
· Pipe bursts
· Plumbing leaks
· Sewage backup
· Water used to extinguish a fire
· Poor ventilation
· Roof leaks
What are the Signs of Mold Growth?
Because mold can cause serious issues, it’s vital that homeowners are aware of the signs of mold growth. The following are just some of the signs of visible and hidden mold growth:
· Discolored spots on walls, ceilings, floors, furnishings, etc.
· Musty odors
· Physical symptoms
· High humidity levels
· Excessive condensation
· Recent flooding or plumbing leaks

Old Westbury is a village in the Towns of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. The population was 4,671 at the 2010 census.
Westbury was founded by Edmond Titus, and was later joined by Henry Willis, one of the first English settlers. Westbury had been a Quaker community of isolated farms until the railroad came in 1836. After the Civil War, the New York elite discovered that the rich, well-wooded flat countryside of the Hempstead Plains was a place to raise horses, and to hunt foxes and play polo at the Meadow Brook Polo Club.
The Village of Old Westbury was incorporated in 1924, separating itself from Westbury, the adjacent area that housed many of the families of the construction and building staffs for the Old Westbury mansions. The ‘Old’ part of Old Westbury’s name reflects the community’s need for its postal address to be different from the Westbury in Cayuga County, as per postal requirements (it had been using a postal address of North Hempstead for this reason); residents did this when they wanted a local post office ca. 1841, and when they incorporated Old Westbury as a village, they felt that it would be confusing for the village name and post office name to be different from one another. The Village of Westbury, located adjacent to Old Westbury, adopted that designation when it incorporated in 1932 as Cayuga County’s Westbury’s name was no longer being used.
The area was originally known as Wallage, which is related to a Native American term roughly meaning ‘ditch’ or ‘hole.’ By February 1663, it was known as Wood Edge, and by October 1675 it was known as ‘the Plains edge’ or simply Plainedge. The name Westbury began to be used for the area around 1683. The name Westbury was chosen by Henry Willis, who named it after Westbury, Wiltshire, his hometown in England.
